So you’ve got your online business up and running and you’re setting off on your travelling lifestyle. Presumably you’ve read our blog on how to make money on the road whilst travelling? Here’s the thing; you could be missing out on potential customers if you’re not running a mailing list. Yes, I know we all believe that mailing lists are dead and social media is where the real people are at, but guess what? We are all wrong (myself included). Let’s scale up your online business; build your mailing list, sell directly to your customers & grab you some more money!
I’ve researched some stats to demonstrate the importance of mailing lists and selling through this channel over and above social media…
Cold, Hard, Stats:
|Total users||4 billion||3.96 billion|
|Open Rate Click through rate||22.86% OR 3.7% CTR||0.58% engagement rate|
As of July 2020:
7.79 billion people in the world
4.57 billion internet users in the world
3.96 billion active social media user accounts (& with everyone having on average 5.5 accounts each then this brings
4 billion email users in the world
Email is 40 times more effective at acquiring new customers than Facebook or Twitter.
Of those who go online when they first wake up 58% will open emails, whilst only 14% will check their social media, (5% check the news, 20% open a search engine, 3% check their company intranet)
44% of users check their email for a deal from a company they know, whereas only 4% go to fb
60% of consumers state they have made a purchase as a result of a marketing message they received by email.
Social media doesn’t have a great engagement rate at around 0.58%, however, email reaches about 58% of the people you send it to, and has an open rate of almost 23%
OK, so enough of the stats! What should I be doing to harness this impressive power of email marketing?
It’s simple; you need to start to build your mailing list subscribers and pinging out emails on a regular basis, the easiest way to do this it to sign up to a web based email automation company that allows you to quickly and easily create landing pages, lead magnet pages, funnels and automation messages that send to your mailing list so you don’t have to!
We use Get Response to build our mailing lists both for our online events business and for our mailing list on International Travel. Once you’ve signed up (they handily offer a trial period) then you have to create what is called a lead magnet – something that will pique your target’s interest and encourage them to want to learn more. The lead magnet needs to be a PDF or a webinar or pre-recorded video – something that the target needs to put their email address in, to get. Once they have request to download it, you have their email address and they have opted in to your mailing list – voila! The next step is vital. Once you have their email address you need to keep producing and sending emails loaded with value content into their inbox in order to keep them in the list. Check out the funnel building page here.
As you build your mailing list and start to create your emails, keep in mind that each email you send will build trust in your brand and what you are selling. You can then start to introduce sales links, and direct your warm leads to where you want them to go! It’s simple!! But… keeping on track of what emails you have sent to which address, and where people are in your email marketing funnel can be tricky if you don’t have a program that does it all for you! Get response offers a full automation workflow so you can see exactly which email comes next in your ‘workflow’ and each new mail subscriber moves through the work flow at their own sign up rate, so you don’t have to individually email them all. Brilliant!!! I often sit down at my desk when the kids have gone to bed and write 4 or 5 emails deposit them into my workflow and I don’t need to worry about them anymore. They will be auto sent as people work through the time line. I can even add elements such as ‘only send when this link has been clicked’ or ‘send this message when the last email was not opened’. Check out the awesome automated building page here.
